Why a film
You won’t remember it the way you think you will.
Ask anyone who’s been married five years and you’ll get the same answer — fragments. Their mother’s face when the doors opened. Somebody’s laugh from across the room. A few minutes around six when the light went gold.
The rest goes. Not because you didn’t care — because you were in it. You spend the day being hugged, moved from place to place, handed drinks you never finish. You are the only person at your wedding who doesn’t get to watch it.
Photographs give you back what it looked like. They can’t give you back what it sounded like — your vows in your own voice, your dad’s toast the way he actually said it, the few seconds of quiet before everyone started clapping.
That’s the whole argument for a film. Not that it’s beautiful. That it’s the only copy of the day that moves and makes a sound.
